"What's Your Favourite Colour, Dad?"

"What's Your Favourite Colour, Dad?"

Aged around 4, I have a vivid memory of asking my lovely Dad what his favourite colour was. Not an uncommon question at all, but my Dad considered this carefully and gave a characteristically thoughtful answer which I have never forgotten: "When I'm by the sea, it's blue; and when I'm in the countryside, it's green." I can honestly say that I think of this often and completely share his view now - so much so that I tell the story to my own children when they ask me what my favourite colour is. If I try to decide on one more than the other, my brain does a see-saw and points out how beautiful the other one can be, refusing to let me settle on one, so this square painting depicts that dance of colour - not a struggle but an endless interaction which somehow plays into my life force. As children we don't always ask adults many questions - we just wait for them to pepper us with questions. But this must be one of the most frequently asked questions of adults by children. It must be of importance to children to get to the bottom of what and where makes this grown-up feel alive, and without doubt in my dear Dad's case those places are the sea and the countryside. For me, the colours themselves take on a vibrancy which moves me, and this was what I felt seeing the incredible images of the Northern Lights taken in Shropshire in spring 2024.
